Jordan faces an unreasonably complex refugee situation, as it is hosting the second largest proportion of refugees in the world relative to the number of citizens, and the fifth largest number of refugees in absolute terms. Since the outbreak of political violence in Syria in 2011, the government estimates that the number of Syrians residing in Jordan to be a population of 1.4 million, which includes people who left before the war. Since the beginning of the Syrian crisis, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan has initiated the establishment and management of Syrian refugee camps, since the beginning of the influx of Syrian refugees into the Kingdom, in the absence of the role of international organizations and donors at that time to provide security and protection for Syrian refugees, as well as to provide relief services to those in need. Believing that refugee camps are the first haven for refugees and those seeking refuge, assistance, safety, and security, the Kingdom has sought to do so by providing short-term solutions and emergency responses to their humanitarian needs. This article discusses the implications of the Syrian war on Jordan's national security. The analysis focuses on the extent to which Jordan can provide security for Syrian refugees, the volume of Western aid to Jordan, and the United Nations aid to Jordan. It also shows how the Syrian war has entangled Jordan's national security with the refugee issue as Jordan's national resources are limited for supporting Syrian refugees.
